There are so many things to decide, organize, and plan when it comes to moving. Even the most experienced traveler is bound to have questions, so we gathered some of the most common moving questions that people ask us at FlatRate. It is our goal to make moving as stress-free as possible for you from start to finish, including the research process. So here are our answers, all clear and succinct!
How far in advance should I plan my move, and book my movers?
We recommend booking your movers at least 3 weeks prior to a local move, and at least four weeks prior to a long-distance or international move. Keep in mind, that this timeframe is primarily focused on getting your moving logistics organized. We find that most of our clients feel better if they give themselves more time to take care of moving logistics.
How do you determine your FlatRate pricing, and what’s included?
Rather than using the industry standard of charging by the hour and adding on fees later, we create a custom quote based on the details of your move that includes everything upfront. That includes the truck, the moving crew, tolls and gas, and boxes — including two wardrobe boxes. We also include moving your items one flight of stairs, though by letting us know ahead of time we can include additional flights in your quote as needed.
Since we don’t charge by the hour and instead focus on efficiency, we’ll work as long as we need to ensure your move is safely completed.
I’m moving long distances. How long will it take for my things to arrive?
The final time frame depends largely on how far you’re moving and what method of shipping you choose. Express shipments operate between the following locations:
- NYC/DC and LA/SF
- NYC/DC and Houston/Austin
- NYC and Chicago
- NYC/DC and Orlando/Miami
These shipments will take between five and nine days, with trips to Orlando/Miami generally taking four to seven days.
Consolidated shipments take longer, generally between a week and 14 days. Your Relocation Consultant will be able to give you a more specific timeframe for your unique move.
Will my furniture be protected during the move?
Your furniture will absolutely be protected. We shrinkwrap your upholstered furniture and use blankets to securely protect it, and non-upholstered furniture is wrapped in moving blankets. You can see how we wrap and protect your belongings in our video.
How do I get rid of stuff I don’t want to move?
The first option for getting rid of furniture and other belongings would be to use one of the many online platforms for selling gently used furniture, like AptDeco or Kaiyo if you’re in New York. The Facebook marketplace has become quite popular, and Craigslist has long been a staple.
If you have items that you would like to donate, let your Relocation Consultant know. We will provide two Upcycle boxes on moving day, free of charge. Later, these boxes will be dropped off for donation. If it’s removal you need, we can also help with that. We know how to follow all local laws and regulations around disposal, so ask about disposal services with your quote.
When is the best time to move?
Wednesdays tend to be the least popular day of the week for moving, which means you’ll have the least competition for elevators, parking permits, and moving availability. If at all possible, try to avoid Fridays. They tend to be the most popular moving day. Moving in the spring or fall is also preferable to moving in the summer. June, July, and August are the most popular moving months of the year, especially in areas that experience snowy winters.
How do I prepare my home and myself for move day?
If you are doing the majority of packing for yourself, give yourself plenty of time! Make sure you label your boxes clearly and designate anything that you don’t want the movers to take. Identify anything that you would like the movers to pack for you, and make a plan to remove any food that is left.
Pack a personal suitcase that includes important paperwork, medications, extra clothes, toiletries, and anything else you’ll need.
Secure any parking permits or elevator use permits that your moving team will need for moving day. Then, make arrangements for your young children or pets to be somewhere safe so that they will not accidentally get underfoot.
Do you offer insurance for my belongings?
We offer many options for loss and damage insurance for your belongings. You can add insurance to your move through your FlatRate app, or your Relocation Consultant can help you determine the best option for your move.
How much should I tip my movers?
The industry standard is between 10-20% of the cost of your move for local moving services. For long-distance moves, the suggested tip is between 5-8% of your total moving cost split between the pickup team and the delivery team.
Is there anything you WON’T move?
For our safety and yours, there are things we won’t move. We will not move guns or ammunition, chemicals (including household or yard chemicals), pets, plants, or any type of drugs.
