New York City has a lot to celebrate in the month of pride. What better way to do it than with street art? In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, 50 new colorful murals will be painted all over the city from June 1st to the 30th.
As part of a collaboration between NYC Pride and LISA Project NYC, the WorldPride Mural Project will select 50 outstanding artists, both local and international, to create murals within the five boroughs — reflecting and honoring the beauty, struggle, and strides of the LGBTQIA+ community. WorldPride coordinators wrote of the project’s intention, “Art comes in many forms, but as New Yorkers we revere street art. Murals decorate our streets while also telling our stories. The artists behind these creations, and sometimes, massive, works of art breathe even more life into an already vibrant city.”
The murals will be popping up at 50 different locations in New York. Some of the confirmed neighborhoods include the East Village, the Lower East Side, Midtown, Williamsburg, Staten Island, Astoria, and Long Island City. Each mural will serve as a unique interpretation of Pride from popular street artists like Buff Monster, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, Nomad Clan, and Solus to name a few.
